Ayurveda is against mixing Milk with Fruits : What is the truth?

By Dr. Rohini G Varier

Milk is packed with all required minerals (Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorous, Potassium Selinium and Zinc), proteins (Whey and Casein) and Nutrients (Disaccharide, Lactose, Thiamine, Riboflavin and Vit B12), making it a complete food. Ayurveda widely encourages the use of milk as a diet, as a medicine and even in many Panchakarma procedures.

Ayurveda’s approach to dietetics gives a lot of importance to combinations of food. Combining foods with radically different energies can overwhelm the digestive fire (agni) and can cause indigestion, fermentation, gas, bloating, and the creation of toxins.

Ayurveda discourages the use of milk with fish, meat, jaggery, lentils, radish, leafy vegetables, fermented drinks, alcohol etc as it may be the reason for many diseases, especially the diseases of skin.

Another forbidden food group to be used with milk is Fruits !

Milk and fruits are considered healthy all over the world. But this can be a disaster when teamed together. Milk is a type of animal protein which causes acidity and bloatedness when combined with certain fruits.

This is bad news for milkshake lovers everywhere.

– Bananas and milk makes a very tasty and favorite combination but Ayurveda strictly talks about its compatibility. Bananas are heating while milk is cooling. Further, milk is sweet and bananas become sour as they break down. When bananas and milk are eaten together, their opposing qualities tend to soften the digestive fire and can disturb the balance of intestinal flora, which results in the release of free radicals. This later becomes toxins and can lead to several health issues like congestion, colds, coughs, allergies, hives, and rashes. A similar situation arises when we combine any sour fruit with milk.

Similarly, milk and melons should not be eaten together. Both are cooling, but milk is laxative and melon diuretic. Also both have variable times of digestion as milk digests much slower than melons. Moreover the stomach acid required to digest the melon causes the milk to curdle, so Ayurveda advises against taking milk with sour foods.

Don’t worry ! There are some fruits which you can pair with milk.

  • The fruits that can be combined with milk should be sweet and buttery like Mangoes, Avocado and Figs.

Being mindful of these facts can save you from a world of worries and pain.
