Going nuts over Nuts. What does Ayurveda say?

Munching nuts randomly to keep hunger away in between meals are often done by everyone.  Nuts, seeds, and pulses are all nutrient-dense foods and have been a regular constituent of mankind’s diet since pre-agricultural times.

They contain high amounts of vegetable protein and fat, mostly unsaturated fatty acids. They are also dense in a variety of micronutrients and provide dietary fiber, vitamins (e.g., folic acid, niacin, tocopherols, and vitamin B6), minerals (e.g., calcium, magnesium, potassium) and many other bioactive constituents such as phytosterols and phenolic compounds.

The most popular edible tree nuts are almonds (Prunus amigdalis), hazelnuts (Corylus avellana), walnuts (Juglans regia), and pistachios (Pistachia vera). Other common edible nuts are pine nuts (Pinus pinea), cashews (Anacardium occidentale), pecans (Carya illinoiensis), macadamias (Macadamia integrifolia), and Brazil nuts (Bertholletia excelsa). The consumer definition also includes peanuts (Arachis hypogea), which botanically are groundnuts or legumes but are widely identified as part of the nuts’ food group.

According to Ayurveda, generally nuts are hot in nature, unctuous, decrease vata and cause constipation with abdominal distension. Ayurveda recommends using nuts after soaking it for several hours.

Purpose of Soaking Nuts and Seeds

When we soaking nuts and seeds before we eat, we are imitating nature by neutralizing the toxic growth inhibitors by discharging the natural enzymes and energy within them. Soaking also makes the nuts and seeds easier to digest. The nutrients in them will be easily and fully absorbed by the body. Nuts and seeds are also soaked to get rid of the dirt, dust, and tannins. Please note we are not supposed to use the water used for soaking nuts and seeds.

Process of Soaking Seeds

Soaking nuts and seeds required two major things. You can either soak in normal water or warm water.

Take warm water (enough to cover the nuts completely) in a glass bowl or jar and mix a pinch of sea salt to it. Soak the nuts and seeds for 10 to 12 hours. Drain out the soaked water and completely rinse the nuts.

Some more points of attention when consuming nuts :

Make sure the nuts you buy are fresh and in season. Because rancid oils from nuts can actually increase free radicals and are considered toxic.

The best time to have nuts are evenings, say 4PM. Why because by that time the previous meal will be completely digested and there is enough time gap for the next meal.

If you are developing gas, bloating, burping or other digestive complaints related to nuts consumption, reduce the intake. Nuts can also be highly allergic to some people. So consume it with caution.

Nuts are nutritional powerhouses that can eliminate many deficiencies in your daily diet. So, enjoy your snack time with the goodness of soaked nuts.

Stay safe, stay healthy.
