Arthritis is defined as inflammation of one or more joints which can cause pain and swelling. The chance of occurrence of arthritis increases with age. There are many different types of arthritis, each with different causes including wear and tear, infections and underlying systemic diseases.
The most common types of Arthritis’ are Rheumatoid Arthritis and OsteoArthritis. Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease where the body is attacking its own joint tissue, creating inflammation, heat and pain in multiple joints, especially in small joints of hands and feet.
Osteoarthritis is a wear and tear disorder of the connective tissue of joints which is very common especially in old age. The degeneration of the soft tissue in the joints causes pain, inflammation and swelling. Osteoarthritis most commonly affects the weight bearing joints in the body, like knees and ankles.
Some other arthritis that are commonly seen are Gout, Psoriatic Arthritis etc. In Ayurveda, joint disorders are mainly explained under Vata Vyadhi and Vata Rakta. Vata Vyadhi explains about arthritis which are caused due to degeneration and Vata Rakta explains about arthritis of inflammatory nature.
